BlackBerry assures India on access to services
BlackBerry's Canadian maker will provide India with technical solutions next week to help read its encrypted data that New Delhi sees as a security threat, a senior government source has said.
The assurance raised hopes that India might withdraw its threat to ban messenger and encrypted email.
India has given Research In Motion, the maker of the popular BlackBerry smartphone, until August 31 to comply with a request to gain access to encrypted corporate email and messaging services or those services will be shut.
RIM is under pressure from governments around the world to give access to its codes. Other firms have also faced scrutiny since officials intensified their fight against Islamic militants misusing mobile devices.
"They have assured that they will come with some technical solution for messenger and enterprise mail next week," the government source said. "Our technical team will evaluate if it works."
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said the government had concerns over Internet telephony and would take it up with companies such as Skype.
Earlier in the day, BlackBerry officials met Indian authorities, now pledged to go after firms, including Google, to keep the world's fastest growing mobile phone market safe from militants and cyber spying.
After the meeting, Robert Crow, a vice president at BlackBerry, expressed optimism that the company would resolve India's worries. "It is a step in a long journey," he said.
Pakistani-based militants used mobile and satellite phones in the attacks on Mumbai in 2008, which killed 166 people. The militants were suspected of using Internet telephony, which is widely available.
The authorities have for more than a year been looking at Google's messaging, Skype and other providers of communication in India.
"Wherever there is a concern on grounds of national security the government will want access and every country has a right to lawful interference," a senior interior security official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.
STRICT IMPORT RULES
India has already forced mobile phone operators, including leading Bharti Airtel, to follow strict import rules when buying telecoms network equipment.
Chinese manufacturers Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp have been temporarily prevented from shipping network equipment for fears of embedded spyware.
"We have concerns regarding these (Google and Skype) services on grounds of national security and all those services which cannot be put to lawful interference," the same source said.
India's demands follow a deal with Saudi Arabia, where a source said RIM agreed to give authorities codes for BlackBerry Messenger users. The United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Algeria also seek access.
How much brinkmanship is involved remains to be seen. Not one country recently threatening to ban BlackBerry corporate email or messaging services has carried through with the threat.
"We don't expect a ban actually. There will be some solution before the deadline," said a senior official with a mobile phone operator in India, who did not want to be identified.
Officials say RIM had for a time proposed tracking emails without sharing encryption details, but that was not enough.
India, like other countries, has been criticised for seeking blanket restrictions while mobile phone operators say they have to offer consumers privacy and secure communications.
India is also keen to retain its position as one of the world's fastest growing IT nations.
Competitors have eaten into RIM's once-dominant share of the North American smartphone market, pushing the company to look to places like India and Saudi Arabia for growth.
A shutdown would hit one million users in India out of the smartphone's 41 million users, allowing them to use the devices only for calls and Internet browing.

Saudi Blackberry service resumes
Blackberry services have been restored in Saudi Arabia, reports say.
A ban on the use of the device for sending and receiving messages was due to have come into force.
And locals said the handsets had stopped working for four hours.
But there is no sign yet that the ban has been lifted. Earlier reports that Blackberry manufacturers RIM (Research in Motion) had found a solution to security issues raised by local authorities cannot be confirmed.
The authorities object to the devices because they operate an encrypted message service meaning that communication from Blackberry devices cannot be monitored.
The BBC's Ben Thompson, in Dubai, said that there are conflicting reports about why the handsets are currently working again.
"Services are up and running again across the country," he confirmed.
"But inevitably, that raises more questions than it answers. If RIM did grant Saudi Arabia access to its security codes, other countries in the region would now expect the same.
"The UAE - which is threatening its own ban by October alongside Algeria, Indonesia and India would all be expecting similar deals."
Dubai-based British businessman Nazar Musa said that had been a lot of local interest in the issue.
"There's been an awful lot of discussion and debate about the Blackberry issue," he told BBC News.
"Clearly as a centre of regional business and with links and ties to the rest of the world the use of Blackberry services is vital."
He added that there had been "limited concern" expressed on chat rooms about the desire of the authorities to access the data itself.
RIM has been contacted by the BBC.
In a statement earlier this week a spokesperson for the company said that the devices were deliberately designed to prevent anybody from accessing individual message data, which is stored on servers in Canada.
"RIM cannot accommodate any request for a copy of a customer's encryption key, since at no time does RIM, or any wireless network operator or any third party, ever possess a copy of the key."

How To Update BlackBerry Device Software
Microsoft has posted step by step instructions on how you can upgrade your BlackBerry SmartPhone that has version 4.3 of the device software to a later version.
These are instructions to update a BlackBerry Smartphone containing device software version 4.3 to a later version. In order to upgrade the Smartphone in an enterprise setting, you will need to do so from your desktop PC running the BlackBerry Desktop Software, have Microsoft Outlook running, and connect the Smartphone to your PC via the USB cable. You cannot do the upgrade using Exchange Outlook Web Access (OWA) from your PC browser.
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Smartphone; Windows Mobile 6; Windows Vista; Windows XPThe file is a Microsoft Word document. Users who do not have Microsoft Word can view this document through the downloadable Word Viewer.
I tried to do some research and figure out why Microsoft has this particular device and software version singled out on their download site with step by step instructions but have drawn a complete blank. Any chance one of you know why they have this available? Maybe there was some specific issue between Windows and this software that was causing problems?
Please comment if you have an idea about this. I have never owned a BlackBerry so I am really unfamiliar with the software.

iPhone apps way more popular than Blackberry apps
In the smartphone market RIM's Blackberry is number one with Apple's iPhone in a distant second place. But in the app world Apple is leading the way. Currently the iPhone app store gets 10 to 20 times more downloads per day over the Blackberry app store.
Business Insider says that the Blackberry App World has 20 million registered users and nearly 1 million apps downloaded daily according to RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie. Where Apple has anywhere between 10 to 20 million app downloads per day.
Currently the top free app in the Blackberry App World is RIM's own Blackberry Messenger followed by a text to speech application that can read your text messages and emails. Where the top free apps right now in iTunes are Spill Da' Milk and Little Metal Ball. The top two Blackberry apps are boring but the top iPhone apps are fun and interactive. If RIM wants to gain shares in their app store they need to make the Blackberry more accessible to gaming which seems to be what users want.

RIM buys out Viigo
Although the timing of the announcement is a bit of a surprise given that RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium kicks off in one month’s time, Mark Ruddock, CEO of popular BlackBerry development firm Viigo, announced Friday afternoon that his firm has been acquired by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. Viigo, whose self-titled application is easily one of the most popular applications for BlackBerry, started out life as an RSS reader but made big waves in 2008 when it began introducing new features to the application such as the ability to track sports scores, weather, movie times, stock performance, flight information and notifications, podcasts and more. Viigo has historically developed for Windows Mobile, although it is unclear whether or not this will continue in the wake of the acquisition. But if Ruddock’s failure in his note to mention any future plans for Windows Mobile is any sign of things to come, then things aren’t looking so rosy for any platform that isn’t in the best interest of BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Desktop Software 5.0.1 Available for Download
Research in Motion has recently updated the BlackBerry Desktop Software solution the owners of a BlackBerry device can use for connecting their handsets to a Windows-based computer. The application offers users a set of tools for syncing their smartphones with personal and enterprise email accounts, calendars and more, and now a series of enhancements are available for them.
The BlackBerry Desktop Software 5.0.1 release comes with various new features, including some related to synchronization, IP modem, application loader, user interface and more. The software comes with support for new languages, including Greek and Hebrew, as well as for the new Windows 7 OS from Microsoft, and for additional devices, including the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Storm2 9520 and the BlackBerry Storm2 9550.
The list of new features also includes:
· Support for new fields on the address book for your device
· Enhancements to the synchronization process for organizer data
· User interface for using your device as an IP modem
· Back up and restore secure services on your device while loading software
· Moved link to check for BlackBerry Desktop Manager updates to the Help menu
Some of the issues present in the previous release of the application have been resolved, including an error that occurred when one used the Application Loader from a remote machine, or a bug that prevented users from backing up their on-board device memory if there were no other computer databases, which was present in the Advanced section for Backup and Restore.
Among the other fixes that arrived with the new release, we can count one for the Bluetooth connection in Windows Vista, one that displayed the model number as 9550 when the BlackBerry Storm2 9520 Smartphone was connected, as well as a bug that prevented the synchronization of data in the Address Book for Microsoft Outlook for languages with accented characters or extended character sets, and other fixes more.
