Adobe releasing APIs to support 3D acceleration

Adobe announced at Adobe Max 2010 that they are releasing APIs to support 3D accelerated flash games. The new set of APIs, code named Molehill, will allow developers to create games that support graphics acceleration on all Flash supported platforms.

Flash Project Manager Thibault Imbert said:

Technically, Molehill is a set of shadow-based 3D GPU-accelerated APIs which expose features like cube textures, Z-buffering, fragment and vertex shaders and all that cool stuff. Developers will be able to create high-end 3D rendering in the Flash runtime, Flash Player or AIR. We also provide as part of the same API a CPU foldback for when the hardware is incompatible, which is very exciting.

Currently, according to Thinq, Flash renders thousands of non Z-buffered triangles at around 30Hz but with the new set of APIs Flash will be able to render hundreds of thousands of Z-buffered triangles at full screen HD resolution with a refresh rate of 60Hz. To show off the new abilities of Flash Adobe showed a video of a game called Max racer.

A company by the name of Frima Studios announced today that Adobe selected them as a pre-release partner for the Molehill platform. Frima Studio CEO Steve Couture said:

This opens up endless possibilities to creating the next generation in-browser entertainment, where the visual quality is equivalent to console and mobile platforms like iPhone and Wii.

Frima also released a video of Molehill in action for their upcoming game Zombie Tycoon.

Adobe launches 3D APIs for Flash

Adobe has launched a new set of low-level GPU-accelerated 3D APIs for use across the Flash runtimes.

Named Molehill, the new tools will allows developers to use multi-platform graphics card acceleration on PC Mac and Linux through Flash Player 10.1.

Adobe has been demonstrating Molehill using an implementation of 3D racing game MAX Racing at the company's recent shindig.

"Technically, Molehill is a set of shadow-based 3D GPU-accelerated APIs which expose features like cube textures, Z-buffering, fragment and vertex shaders and all that cool stuff," said Flash project manager Thibault Imbert. "Developers will be able to create high-end 3D rendering in the Flash runtime, Flash Player or AIR."

Flash Player currently renders thousands of non Z-buffered triangles at approximately 30 Hz. With the new 3D APIs, developers can expect hundreds of thousands of z-buffered triangles to be rendered at HD resolution in full screen at around 60 Hz. Which is quite a leap.

GPU overhead is reportedly tiny even with sophisticated 3D rendering, but even if your graphics card isn't up to snuff, Imbert reckons all is not lost.

"We also provide as part of the same API a CPU foldback for when the hardware is incompatible, which is very exciting."

You can see more of Imbert's Molehill musings here, or check out the video of MAX Racing below.

New Adobe Reader 10 gets added security and usability updates

Today Adobe announced the next version of their Acrobat Family of Products which includes Adobe Reader as well as Acrobat Suite, Acrobat Pro, and Acrobat Standard. The version 10 will be henceforth written with the Roman numerical ‘X’. The most notable change in Adobe Reader X, apart from the new numbering scheme, is improved security brought about by the so called ‘Protected mode’.

Adobe’s senior director of product security and privacy explains:

With Adobe Reader Protected Mode enabled all operations required by Adobe Reader to display the PDF file to the user are run in a very restricted manner inside a confined environment, the “sandbox.” Should Adobe Reader need to perform an action that is not permitted in the sandboxed environment, such as writing to the user’s temporary folder or launching an attachment inside a PDF file using an external application (e.g. Microsoft Word), those requests are funneled through a “broker process,” which has a strict set of policies for what is allowed and disallowed to prevent access to dangerous functionality.

In addition, Adobe Reader X also adds new features that will help users work more efficiently with PDF files. Included in the latest Reader software are Sticky notes and Highlighter tools that enable users mark up PDF documents, add comments and share feedback. Keyboard shortcuts for common functions like print, or zoom, and new reading modes can now be accessed from within the browser.

According to the announcement, Adobe Reader X will be capable of interacting with complex PDF files that contain an even wider variety of content types, including drawings, email messages, spreadsheets, videos, and other multimedia elements.

Adobe will also start offering a new service through Reader that will allow users to share PDFs through an Adobe-hosted location on the web. Through this service users will be able to create PDF, securely share and store and even screen share.

Adobe also revealed that the upcoming Adobe Reader X will be available for Android, Windows Phone 7, and even the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Adobe Reader X will be available for free download starting next month.

Microsoft and Adobe chiefs met to discuss Apple and possible merger

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen set up an hour long secret meeting to discuss a variety of topics, including a possible acquisition of Adobe by Microsoft. According to The New York Times, some of the discussions focused on how the two companies could also take down Apple's mobile market share.

As Apple continues to dominate the mobile market, with Google quickly catching up, Microsoft is stepping into the mobile game, possibly a little too late to make a strong impact within the next year. However, that hasn't stopped Microsoft from doing whatever it can to make the largest impact possible.

The discussions between Microsoft and Adobe have remained quiet, but sources say that talks regarding Microsoft acquiring Adobe were mentioned. Discussions of a possible merger might even end here, but this is pause for thought for both Microsoft and Adobe, after all, this is how Microsoft came about a search deal with the second largest search giant, Yahoo!

When Microsoft launched Silverlight in 2007, they became a direct competitor of Adobe Flash. If Microsoft does acquire Adobe, we could eventually see a slow phase out of Adobe Flash Player, and see Microsoft Silverlight slowly take its place. With Microsoft holding 100% of the market, Apple and Google could potentially be in trouble, unless web developers decide to adopt HTML5.

At the time of posting, Adobe stock soared over 11% on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Media companies to Apple: We're sticking with Flash

Just a day after Apple overtook Microsoft as the world's most valuable tech company, the New York Post is reporting the end of Apple's brief ego-trip. According to their sources, large media companies, such as NBC and Time Warner, have told Apple that they'll be sticking with Flash for their online content. Apparently, changing their entire system to work with the iPad would be too costly. With Flash dominating the web, they don't feel it to be worth their time and money.

Last month, in an open letter to Adobe entitled "Thoughts on Flash," CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, made his point of view crystal clear. In his opinion, Adobe's Flash platform is not suitable for their mobile devices and the company has, therefore, decided to push HTML5 as their preferred method for online media content delivery. Jobs has taken his stance so far, to the point where Apple no longer allows Adobe's tools to be used in the development of iPhone, iPod, or iPad apps.

Other media companies, such as Disney and CBS, have accommodated Jobs on some level. Disney has created an iPad app, and CBS is trying to offer a limited number of shows via the iPad's browser. However, news of media companies as large as NBC and Time Warner shunning Jobs and his radical approach can't be good for the makers of the world's most popular smartphone and tablet. It's also not good for consumers, who, in the end, are the ones that lose out.

Adobe Reader faces its first genuine competition from a free alternative

Even today, we tend to use the phrase "Adobe PDF" when referring to the Portable Document Format, despite the fact that Adobe released its ownership of the standard into the open community in 2008. The typical opinion has been that releasing PDF as ISO/IEC 32000-1 was more of a symbolic gesture, but that Acrobat would always remain the principal application for creating PDF files.

But it isn't a monopoly that users particularly like anymore. A security study last February by security software provider Webroot of its own SMB customers revealed that nearly a quarter believe they are susceptible to cyber-attacks on account of insecure plug-ins including Adobe Reader. That feeling is compounded by raw data from Mozilla providing evidence that as many as half of all Firefox browser crashes are triggered by either Adobe Flash or Adobe Reader -- a fact which compelled Mozilla's engineers to redesign the entire plug-in model for Firefox 3.6.4.

Today, the makers of what started out as a set of Acrobat plug-ins and later became a commercial alternative to Acrobat itself, are making their first real bid to unseat Adobe as the de facto software provider for PDF. The way Nitro PDF Software is doing this is by releasing today a free alternative to Adobe Reader that replaces the Reader plug-in entirely.

The replacement will be an application that not only lets users edit the PDF files they download, but type new text at any point into those files, and create new PDF files as well.

"PDF is all that we do. We live and breathe it. So the next logical step for us was to introduce a free PDF reader, but one that is revolutionary and that the world has been waiting for," pronounced Gina O'Reilly, Nitro PDF's senior vice president of marketing, in an interview with Betanews.

"With Adobe Reader, I'm sure you're familiar with the typical complaints: It's bloated, it's vulnerable to security attacks, but more importantly, it's simply lacking in functionality. All it is, is a viewer and a printer; and unless you have paid a premium to do anything else, that's all it does," O'Reilly continued. "A lot of other options in the market come with some sort of compromise. So in the case of Adobe Reader, that might be a large footprint and annoying reminder updates, [along with] restricted functionality, in the fact that there is none."

Nitro PDF Reader is a stand-alone application that uses the Ribbon UI functionality made popular by Microsoft Office. If it has any drawbacks over Adobe Reader at all, it's the fact that it doesn't view PDF files inside the browser context. Instead, you download PDFs through whatever your browser happens to be, and they appear in the separate Nitro application context. But in that context, the application will offer some features that will compete with Acrobat, Adobe's commercial PDF producer application line, the most obvious being the ability to create and save PDF files from scratch.

Nitro PDF's chief product officer Lonn Lorenz -- a veteran product manager from Adobe -- gave Betanews a demonstration: "Let's say that I have a file that I want to send around for comment and review. If I zoom in on this page and I want to create a Post-It note...As I put a note in place, it keeps track of who put the note down, what time and date that they added it, and I can add my note to that.

"When I send this out to people to get comments back on," Lorenz continued, "I can just go to the File menu and e-mail this PDF, and it'll automatically launch your e-mail client, attach this PDF, and you can send it off for review. Once you open this file and see this comment, you could add your own reply. With your reply to this comment, you could start a thread of conversation around this review. You could also use the text highlight tools, where you can highlight, cross out, or underline text...I can actually start to make use of my PDF files. Where the Adobe Reader and other readers are limited in this regard is, I can actually save my file! How simple is that? All the basic functionality in a free product."

One feature that I found truly inspiring -- something I would literally use every day -- is a simple button that lets you stamp a PDF form with a scan of your signature. Many legal firms have gotten into the habit of printing out the final page of a PDF contract, then signing the contract, scanning it back in, and appending it to the PDF, just so the final page can bear a signature. With this feature, Nitro PDF keeps scans of multiple signatures on hand, and you can stamp one and resize it to fit any location on a page.

Though it's too early to declare that Nitro PDF "thought of everything," it's clear that during its beta process, its engineers did think ahead. The free Nitro PDF Reader does include the ability to protect files with a simple password, and to embed fonts where necessary (the company's commercial edition has more extensive options). And to help deter situations where certain PDFs can be maliciously re-engineered, users can selectively block their PDFs from having the ability to make embedded calls to Web sites, with selected exceptions -- a kind of localized firewall. Lorenz also told us users will have the ability to turn off JavaScript execution ability and leave it off.

"What Adobe has potentially made a very grave mistake in doing is not being more proactive in responding to attacks, and not really addressing them in any meaningful way," argued Nitro PDF's Gina O'Reilly. "So when we conceptualized Nitro PDF Reader...one of our main goals was to ensure that our product is secure, and that we are responsive. We're currently working with a third party to get validation for Nitro PDF Reader, so that we can stand up and say...the product stands up, and in the areas that we might not stand up, we will be addressing. We've kind of turned the security issue on its head, in that rather than expecting things to happen and then addressing them, we're trying to get on the forefront with this. It's very important that our users feel safe and secure when using the product."

Adobe Wants to Prove Apple Wrong With 10.1 Flash Upgrade

Adobe Introduces an upgraded version of Flash at the Google I/O conference in hopes of silencing critics.

It hasn’t been the most fun of years for Adobe. Despite still claiming over a 90 percent saturation rate online, the once great software manufacturer began to look like it would soon be forced to admit defeat as its flagship Flash program continues to lose its appeal to a young and untested HTML5 program. It is the battle of the aging gunfighter versus the hot young kid that is looking to take out a legend and wear the crown. But it looks like Flash just bought some new guns, and the program is not yet ready to go gentle into that goodnight.

Today at the Google I/O conference, Adobe Systems CEO Shantanu Narayen  introduced Flash 10.1, an upgraded program that Adobe hopes will stem the growing tide of criticism that Apple is at the peak of.

The new Flash 10.1 will be a mobile application that Adobe claims will support touch screens, conserve battery life, and take advantage of faster mobile processors- all of which were complaints that Steve Jobs mentioned during his open letter to Adobe explaining why he thought they sucked.

One drawback is that the program will require Android 2.2 “Froyo” as a minimum requirement. The development of Froyo has been public knowledge for months, but today marked its official debut.

Although the new Flash will directly combat many of the criticisms leveled at it by Apple, criticisms that Microsoft later echoed, it seems unlikely that Adobe and Apple will mend fences anytime soon despite Adobe’s most recent ad that is either saying that they still love Apple, or it is mocking Steve Jobs’ company, depending on your point of view.

Now, creativity knows no bounds, as users can paint directly on 3D models and surfaces, merge 2-D files onto 3D images and animate 3D objects. The 3D engine has been rebuilt from the ground up to provide faster performance, allow editing of properties like light and the ability to create more realistic renderings with a new high-quality ray-tracer. Video professionals have the ability to turn any 3D object into a video display zone and can animate 3D objects and properties with ease. In addition, the core motion graphics editing has been improved with more efficient single-key shortcuts.

Photoshop users may take a while to move to the new 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5, but it's an important development; meanwhile, CS5 offers plenty of other significant upgrades to keep 32-bit users happy.

Photoshop now comes in both 32- and 64-bit Windows Vista versions. The 64-bit edition will allow PCs with lots of RAM to work on very large images with less hard-disk swapping (ideally, no swapping at all), thus speeding up operations. With the shrinking amount of RAM available to modern PCs (due to a 4GB limit on 32-bit Windows versions and those operating systems' increasing hunger for RAM), that's a significant update.
