Later this week, Facebook will be implementing a new ability for when you update your status using the social network: you can send those updates to your Twitter account as well. The feature will be built-in to Facebook’s user interface and not through a separate app that you install, TechCrunch is told.
Some Facebook employees are already testing out the new FB-to-Twitter ability using the new fb.me URL shortener that it launched earlier today. Twitter helped popularize URL shorteners due to the social networking giant only allowing 140 characters in each “tweet”.
The new functionality turns Facebook, itself, into a third-party Twitter application in attempt to generate more traffic back to its own website. MySpace also recently added a Twitter integration into its own website, which allows you to post status updates from MySpace to Twitter and vice-versa. You can only post your Facebook status on Twitter and not the other way around.
