Amazon Brings Internet Shopping to Facebook

Amazon.com has quietly installed a storefront within Facebook - to sell Pampers diapers.

The "Shop Pampers Now" store is an offshoot of the Pampers fan page, and is powered by Amazon Webstore, a service Amazon sells to provide a custom-branded Web store for third-party products. Existing Amazon customers include Timex, Handstands, Bella Sara, Motorola, and MTV.

Although the page appears on Facebook, the ordering process is actually performed and fulfilled via a user's Amazon account, and backed by Amazon's delivery guarantees. Users can buy diapers, baby wipes, and other related products.

What this means for users is probably an expansion of "fan" pages on Facebook into more of an e-commerce experience, without the need to leave the Facebook page. In a statement, Proctor & Gamble (which owns the Pampers brand) said that it plans to expand e-commerce capabilities. to other brands' Facebook pages and retailers in the coming months.

Amazon charges 0.7 percent of sales and above, plus $9.99 per month as administrative costs for a Webstore, when bundled with its Selling on Amazon and Fulfillment by Amazon services. Payment processing and fraud-protection fees also apply, starting at 1.9 percent plus $0.30 per transaction, the company said.
