Messenger for Mac finally gets audio, video chat

Microsoft Messenger for Mac is finally getting with the times by adding audio and video chat.

The company on Wednesday released a beta version of Messenger for Mac 8, the latest version that's due out by the holidays along with Office for Mac 2011. And it finally supports the multimedia features its Windows counterpart has had for years.

Windows Live Messenger, then MSN Messenger, gained audio-chat capabilities in 2000, a Microsoft spokesperson said. And video chat was added in 2003. Talk about lagging behind.

No huge surprise, though. It's not like Microsoft reserves a lot of capital for its Mac-software business. And the last update to Messenger for Mac came two years ago.

Mac users can download the beta here.
